Responsibility
Innovation in business, in mining and in corporate responsibility is part of the culture at National Coal. As a natural resource company, National Coal takes its responsibility to the land and to the communities in which it resides seriously.
The Company also embraces new technologies and procedures that could potentially lessen the impact coal has on our environment.
Reclamation
At National Coal reclamation is carefully planned and included as a part of the entire mining process from beginning to end. Environmental experts, residents, state and federal officials and other interested parties all work together to determine the most desirable use of the land. Therefore, reclamation varies from area to area and site to site. With new technology and improving scientific methods, reclamation has become more effective and produces a more environmentally sensitive result.
National Coal is funding research to find plants and shrubs that are adapted to the areas being mined, so that the area is returned to its former state, quickly and successfully. Graduate students from University of Tennessee at Knoxville are testing plants and trees that are common to the mountains in our area and trying to identify methodology for reforestation of surface mine sites. They also help determine repeatable standards that National Coal and other area coal producers can use to reclaim the land with geographically-appropriate ground cover.
Becasue of these efforts, the American Chestnut tree has been reintroduced to Tennessee and more than 250,000 have been successfully planted since 2008.
Community Involvement
National Coal's employees participate in many community activities with the Company's support. Most recently, Our CEO Daniel Roling gave a presentation about coal's impact on the community at the Fountain City, Tenn. Rotary Club. The Company also supports and works with other community groups. To see our employees in action visit our Flickr page which highlights these achievements.
